Tommy, Scott, and Jamie's visit for Frankie's Mom's Wake/Funeral

In mid-July a good friend of mine, Frankie's, mother sadly passed away. Frankie and I have known each other and worked together for seven years so he has been my family in Nassau. When his mother passed away, three of our friends flew down from Boston and FL for the wake and funeral. Frankie grieved in the only way he knew how: total avoidance. Our somber weekend of mourning turned into hardcore partying. He wanted to take his mind off of it, so we helped him. Club drugs, alcohol, dancing, bar hopping, carrying Jamie out of the bar one night, hitching a ride to Rose another, almost getting into a bar fight, it was quite the weekend. It all ended up with me searching for my clothes at a friend’s house Monday morning very late to take my friends to the airport.

Staff Antics

On major commonality with people who are staffers is their insatiable need to party. Whenever there is a free minute, be it 10am or 10pm, a bar better be in sight because that’s where you’ll find us. The copious hours that everyone worked caused everyone to party real hard in their little off-time. One night we decided to have a girls night for Andrea’s birthday. This involved them coming on the student snorkel cruise that I was working that day. Amanda and Andrea, the bday girl, came on with a single mission to drink their faces off. To the point that when the cruise was over, we were helping carry them off the boat, not the kids. After a nap, we were all ready for dinner, drinks, and dancing. We went to dinner at Nobu at the Atlantis and then up to Aura (vegas style club) for dancing and $15 martinis. Dinner was perfectly civil, but what proceeded was certainly not. Amanda let some guy feel her up for a round of free drinks (thanks Amanda, way to take one for the team), we danced with everyone we could and then went downstairs for snack time, where Amanda proceeded to sit cross legged in a short dress housing a bag of chex mix as we all fought over the trail mix in the middle of the atrium of the casino. Finally it was time to get out of there, so we went over to a late night bar, Bambu where I ran into an acquaintance that tried to hold my hand and kiss me within the first 5 minutes of seeing him. All the while, Amanda and Andrea are getting kicked out of the club, because they managed to get into the store room and tried to steal red bull and a bottle of Whiskey. So I had to put them into a cab and send them home to wait for the rest of our staff that were getting off club duty to join us, now me. Just another night.

My Dating Spree

So briefly tried to date this Scotsman that was teaching on the island. It was rather unsuccessful due to timing, schedules, and effort. Nonetheless, when he moved away, my heart was a bit bruised and I needed to take my mind off of it. So hence the dating spree. Unlike Boston, men are much more forward here. How genuine it is is uncertain, but nonetheless options for dates are plenty. So I decided that if you wanted to take me out, go for it, I’ll go. So I accepted three dates with three very different men and let the dice roll.

Date 1: Cliff the Aquatic Director of the Atlantis
Background with Cliff is that my friends Nelly and Adam have been trying to set us up since I got to the island in March. But he didn’t find his balls until about June. Coming off of a very hectic month, with not a lot of free time, if I am going to give you my night you better have your shit together. That said, I give him my Thursday night. We decide he’ll call me when he’s done with work. I don’t hear from him, so I give him a call. I ask him two things, what time he is picking me up and if we are going to eat dinner. Two, I think, very simple questions, his response, “I don’t know but I know that I am looking forward to hanging out with you.” Buddy, that is not an answer. P - You are picking me up right, because I cant get a staff car tonight. C - Um, yeah, let me call you when I get home. P - Fine Cliff, call me when you figure it out. So I decide to go to dinner with my staff, come back change and am ready for the 8:00pm agreed time. 8:45pm, Cliff rolls up. I’m trying not to be annoyed because he’s an island man, this is typical. I get in and ask what we are going to do. Well, I have to drop a friend at work first, then I thought we could play some pool. P – Is this his car, is that why you have to drop him. C – Yes. P - Ok fine. (Another typical Bahamian thing) So we pick this guy up, have to then stop by his Grammie’s, then finally drop him off. Its been a really good date for the three of us so far. Two hours later we drop him off and go the pool hall. We get there the tables are full so we go for a walk. Listen people, I have been on my feet all day, Im tired, I don’t want to take a walk and go window shopping. Those of you who don’t know this, I HATE shopping. Then comes a series of interview questions. About my life plans, what my likes/dislikes are, etc. By the end, I tell him I am tired and want to go home. Just before I get out, he says, well thanks for a good night, you answered a lot of questions for me. I didn’t realize that I was on an interview. I got out and went straight to the bar.

Date 2: James the son of the Swedish Consulate
Background with James, I met him months ago, but he got kinda creepy stalker so I cut him out. But I ran into him again and my boss, gave him the vouch again, saying he was really a decent guy. So I give him another chance. We went in to the US Ambassador’s house for the 4th of July celebration. It was a really nice event, Hank Aaron even spoke, which I still think is a bit strange. Open bar, tons of food, and James wasn’t too creepy. He’s a bit of a chatty Kathy, but my night was Cliff was just so awkward; it was a bit relieving to have seemingly comfortable conversation. To be honest, anything would have been an improvement from my previous night. So after hanging out there for a while, we went back to his condo pool for a party there with his building mates. Had a couple drinks, saw the fireworks, and then proceeded to this friend’s BBQ down the road. Come to find out this friend was Stu’s (the Scotsman) best friend. I walk into the BBQ to an old circle of my life with a new guy. It was really awkward and I needed a stiff drink to get through it. Oops. We continued the night by meeting up with my staff at Senor Frogs after the night cruise came back. Then onto the late night bar Bambu and home after that. It was definitely more fun than Date 1, but James is crazy nuts.

Date 3: Mark the ½ Bahamian, ½ Ozzie Builder/Designer
So I go out with this guy because he asked me out one day when we were all out at Rose Island. We decide to go to his friend’s birthday party together. It was a 60s theme party. Now living out of my suitcase, my wardrobe is limited, so he manages to get a costume for me from his personal assistant. And this costume is awesome. Black and silver sequin dress with silver knee high boots. It was hot. He picked me up (on time!) and we stopped for a drink before we went to the party. We had good steady conversation and then continued onto the party. Now I know Mark through friends of mine but had no idea some of them would be there. I walk into my buddy Grouper bartending and my friends Niven, Patrick, Benicia and Timmy all decked out. It was a little awkward because Benicia and Timmy live in the same complex as James and they just saw me with him the night before, but what can you do, it’s a small island. I had a blast at the party. Everyone was dressed up to the max, great music and good times hanging out with my friends. Now I should say that I had fun because I had fun with Mark, but no spark. Nice guy, zero attraction. So at the end of the night, I told him I wasn’t feeling well and he dropped me home.

3 days, 3 dates, 0 success. But all in all, good to get out there.
